Vietnam DMZ tour

Vietnam DMZ tour with Tam Le, Vietnam DMZ private tour with Tam Le

We had a great day together with Tam, a lot of history and great knowledge about the DMZ area - Really recommended this tour, convenient if you travel from Hanoi: Go to Dong Hoi, get the tour and get dropped off in Hue.

Tam is absolutely great guide, it was pure pleasure to spend a day on his tour. Very positive person, many interesting topics were talked over. After sightseeing invited us for delicious (and spicy!) street food. Also helpful in terms of finding bus station, buying tickets etc. During the day trip we literally became friends. I strongly recommend this tour office.
It's also worth to stay one or two days in Dong Ha because this town lives the regular, everyday life - not many tourists.

We looked for a way to travel efficient from Dong Hoi to Hue and still see all the DMZ highlights. Tam’s full DMZ tour was the perfect way to do that.

After arriving with the night train from Ninh Binh Tam picked us up at Dong Hoi train station.
Tam speaks English very well and has a nice and friendly way to guide you around. Well known in the area, he can provide you with detailed information about what happened at the spots you are visiting.

Would definitely recommend this tour if you are interested in the war history and looking for an effective way to travel from Dong Hoi to Hue.

Before our tour, I searched the internet for a way to see the area we visited, and eventually found your website. I studied your reviews, and after reading them I knew you were the one I wanted to guide us on this tour. All your reviews were the best, and I could discern from them you have a knack for making your guests feel satisfied with your tours.

When we had to change our original schedule, you were gracious in offering the change. But then when we contacted you with our amended dates and found that you were already traveling we were worried we wouldn’t get to have you as our guide. However, to our good fortune, you were again willing to alter your pre-planned trip into Laos and do the tour for us on the only available day that would work. We are very grateful to you for that.

The day we did the tour, it turned out to be just what I had hoped for. You took all the time we wanted to stop and look at the sites I had hoped to see. Camp Eagle, Birmingham, Checkmate, Bastogne, Veghel, and the Ashau Valley. I never thought I would some day have lunch in the Ashau. Loved it!!

And now, having done the tour, I am having feelings I didn't expect to have. I had thought just seeing the old places would be fun, but I now realize how important it was for me to actually go to those places and see how the people there have rebuilt their lives and communities. I know in my heart that is the best part of having your tour. I can see the war is truly over for the Vietnamese people, and so it is in my heart.

I cannot imagine that we could have had a better tour, or a better tour guide for this. Thank you again Tam, from the bottom of my heart, for making it happen.

Myself and 3 buddies were fortunate enough to book our tour through Vina DMZ Travel this past June 2018.

The best experience ever !!!
We had been to Viet Nam in the mid to late 60’s previously and waited 50 years to re-visit.

One of our guys found Vina DMZ Travel and we booked our visit. We were treated very well by Mr Tam and his driver Twhan (sp ?) for our tour. We had our preset destinations largely picked out and Tam added some suggestions that enhanced our tour.

This is a great guy for any of you Nam Vet’s looking to go back and examine the Country under different circumstances. Our tour was in the DMZ in I Corps , where the 4 of us had been in 67, 68 & 69. We would get picked up every morning at our hotel and come back daily after our exploring. The people were very friendly...we always found something to do in the evenings... Dong Ha has changed dramatically in 50 years !

This was a life changing experience for myself...and I believe my 3 brothers ...Marty Martinez , Mike Duerr and Bill McMyler...Semper Fi

I highly recommend Vina DMZ Travel for ANY & ALL Marine Nam Vet’s ...

Tam was an amazing guide! He is a a softly spoken, beautiful soul who's english was perfect. He was keen to both teach us about his country's heritage, culture and history, as well as also learn about ours. The tour was awesome - we were picked up at 6am from our overnight bus and had a chat over coffee. We were taken to so many places of intetest including museums, war cemetary, "Check- Point Charlie", and were the only visitors walking through the Vinh Moc Tunnels - a truely fantastic experience. We have no hessitation in recommending Tam and his company.

I stopped in Dong Ha during my cycling trip through Vietnam and haven't had booked anything in advance.
Nonetheless I tried my luck and simply approached Vina DMZ, which offer guided tours through the former Demilitarised Zone between North and South Vietnam.

Luckily, Tram was still free that afternoon (it was low season) and he was the best guide I can think of: Knowledgeable, caring and fluent in English.
Since I was on my own I decided to go with him on his motorbike. If you're a bigger group, you can also go with him in his car.
We went to see the old helicopter hangar right in the city (it's well hidden), the war cemetery where 10,000 Vietnamese soldiers are buried, the Friendship Bridge in the middle of the DMZ and the very impressive Vinh Moc Tunnels, a tunnel system up to 25m underground. All entry fees are included in the tour budget. Unfortunately it was Sunday and the Mine Action Museum was closed, otherwise we would have seen that as well.

Tam is very knowledgeable about any of the sites and he answered all of my questions. He gave me all the time I needed and even stopped the bike when I wanted to have a closer look at something I saw along the road. He provided me with free water throughout the whole trip and I've always felt safe on the back of his bike.

On the return from our last stop we even stopped at a local seaside restaurant (no tourist trap) and we enjoyed some excellent prawns (not included in the price of the tour).

I think it was the greatest experience I've had in Vietnam so far and would definitely do the tour again anytime with Vina DMZ.

We were picked up by car in the morning by Mr Tam and we drove to the site of the old US Birmingham Firebase close to Hue city. Mr Tam showed us photos of the base and brought us to the exact spots where the helipads and and airfield were.

Next, we drove to the site of another airfield which was overrun by the NVA in 1966. Nowadays, it is a field full of craters large and small. I was struck by how large some of the craters were. We also spotted an Agent Orange cleaning site very close by and we took a quick look without going too close.

Finally, we were brought to the site of the Battle of Hamburger Hill near the border with Laos, in which the US 101st Airborne Division defeated the NVA on Hill 937 (named after its altitude) after sustaining heavy casualties. It took just under an hour of climbing to reach the monument at the top of the hill. The monument is in both Vietnamese and English, and is dedicated to the memory of the NVA defenders who died in the battle.

Some remnants of the battle still remain. I saw foxholes and some rusty barbed wire near the top of the hill. We learned about the units involved as well as the tactics, and it was great to see an historic battle come to life.

There is an option to stop for lunch for an additional $20. I advise anyone considering this trip to take this option. We were provided with a wholesome and filling meal of typical Vietnamese cuisine before making the climb on Hamburger Hill. Hiking gear isn't necessary but may make life easier. If you have it handy, I recommend you bring it. If you don't have it, don't worry about it. The hill is a pretty easy climb with steps accompanying you a lot of the way. Mr Tam provides the water as well so you'll be covered there!

All in all, I would recommend this trip to anyone with a strong interest in the US involvement of the war in Vietnam. My thanks to Mr Tam for his part in making my trip to central Vietnam such a memorable one!

It was more exciting and fun. The food was also amazing.

We did a day long DMZ Tour with Annam Tours. Our guide Tam was excellent. He had great English and was a good tour guide who was well read and knowledgeable about the history but also interested in current affairs which was an added bonus to discussions.
Pick up was straightforward in Dong ha, we took in the main sites/ locations and museums including the Vinh Moc tunnels and also arranged to be dropped off in Phong Nha which was really handy.

We made an enquiry via the website about a tour of the DMZ and the response was very prompt. Mr Tam picked my husband and I up on arrival at Dong Ha station after an overnight train trip from Hanoi. After a quick coffee we headed off on the tour, first stop Truong Son National Cemetary. Over the day we visited Rock Pile, Khe Sanh Combat Base, the Reunification Bridge and the Vinh Moc Tunnels including a stop for a delicious lunch. Mr Tam provided interesting and insightful commentary about the sights and the recent history of Vietnam. At the end of the day we were dropped at our hotel in Hue. The tour cost $US120 for the two of us, not including lunch.

Our driver picked us up and drove a fair distance before we picked up our guide. This did leave us with a little confusion at the start of the day.

We took a private tour to Phong Nga & Paradise Caves - highly recommend it.

Tam our guide was nice, accommodating and knowledgeable. It was a very long day - 7am pick up & 9pm drop off but it didn’t seem too long.

On our way to the caves we stopped by La Vang Cathedral & the DMZ. The Vietnamese DMZ was excellent! To be able to put one foot in the north & the other in the south was magical. It’s such a momentous spot and there is so much information that can be learnt.

Phong Nga caves was nice as you take a motorised boat through a river canal and the caves are nice.

Paradise Cave on the other hand is spectacular! If you have to choose between the two - pick this one. There is a really really long walk to the cave entrance as it is all uphill. Once you get to the entrance it is down steps but remember for every step you go down, you have to walk up them! Once inside, amazing!

Minh was an excellent guide, providing detailed information about all the sites we wanted to visit (Long Hung Church, Quang Tri Citadel, Hiem Loung Bridge and Vinh Moc Tunnels). He allowed us plenty of time to explore, ask questions and to take all the photos we wanted. It was interesting hearing Minh's memories about the effects these tragic events had on him and the members of his family.

Hoang picked us up on time, drove well and delivered us safely to Dong Hoi

We arranged with Tam to collect us from Da Nang Airport and he was there waiting for us on arrival which is always nice to see. His correspondence with us before we arrived was also excellent.
We had asked to be taken to get a Vietnam SIM card and exchange cash which was done very easily on our arrival. We spent a day touring in Hue and then drove to Phong Nha visiting the DMZ area and back to Hoi An after 5 days. He uses different cars and drivers for different days which we hadn’t realised at the beginning but this wasn’t a problem. He was happy to show us anything we asked to see but just felt he could have made other suggestions. He knows a lot about the DMZ and that was great. We had recently done the same sort of thing in India with a car and driver who would stop and go out of his way for photo stops or to see something special that was happening as we drove along. Tam stuck to the itinerary which was fine but felt he could have added a bit more to the trip and stopped for photos without us asking . He did charge more for our day trip to the caves than our hotel would have but it was still nice travelling with the same guide all the time, you felt he was more of a friend. We were able to tell him about places we discovered that he hadn’t heard of that we only learnt from other visitors. BUT we were very happy with his services overall and would recommend him, he is a nice chap to travel with and his English is very good.

Our tour guide was Tam, a very nice, educated, good English speaking person who is very knowledgable about the area, people, the war itself (which was topic) and so much more. We felt well guided and visited what we planned but also un-expected treasure sites Tam brought us to. He adapted very much to our speed and wishes and made the time fly in a relaxing atmosphere. This because his guiding was not a monologue but an exchange and discussion.

My family (wife, 7 yr old, 2 yr old) and I were in Vietnam for a month while my MD wife was volunteering at the hospital in Hue. It was our last weekend before we were heading home and there was a lot of rain forecast. We had only one day of clear skies and were trying to take advantage of the weather. We emailed Tam (owner and tour guide) and asked if we could do what would normally be a 2 day tour in one day, and we asked him the day before. We were expecting a quick no. Instead, he responded amazingly fast with a yes, reasonable quote, and itinerary.

Our family travels a lot and doesn't normally book guided tours, so we were a little hesitant. Saying that, we couldn't have been more happy with the way the day went. We were able to see everything we wanted and Tam couldn't have been nicer. He was able to answer all of our questions regarding the history of what we were seeing and was extremely patient with our family and talkative 2 yr old.

It was an amazing tour with each site having its own attributes to fall in love with. The three sites we visited will forever be remembered as such an amazing place and adventure. Tam was knowledgeable and told us tidbits that made the different places come to life. He was excellent at managing our time, even with two kids that were impossible to hurry.

I can't recommend a tour with Tam and Vina DMZ strongly enough. To emphasize how happy we were with the tour: as a result of this experience, in the future we will book tours in places we hope to visit. We will likely come back to Vietnam and will plan to book all our tours with Vina DMZ in the future.

I hope you book a trip with him and enjoy it as much as we did.
Thanks again Tam for an amazing trip.

He gave us a very interesting tour (non-exhaustive : McNamara line, Hien Luong bridge and surroundings, Vinh Moc Tunnels, Quang Tri Citadel). He is very knowledgeable about the Vietnam war and also gives good insight in the life in Vietnam today. Price/Quality ratio of this 1-Day-tour is perfect. Absolutely recommended.
Hint : we arrived from the north of Vietnam to Dong Ha by nighttrain and were met at the station by Tam. We then continued to Hué in the evening. This is a lot more time-efficient compared to taking a tour from your hotel in Hué.

It was a very fun and exciting experience to travel through the Vietnamese traffic. It was very different to travel by Motorbike. It gave it another kind of feel to the trip. It was more exciting and fun. The food was also amazing.
Tam has shown me many great places to visit and shown me a lot Vietnams history. I would highly recommend taking this Tour and especially with motorbike, as it makes the trip reach a whole nother level

Vietnam DMZ tour with Tam Le, Vietnam DMZ private tour with Tam Le

Tam took my husband and I on the DMZ/Ashau Valley tour, where my brother-in-law fought exactly 50 years ago. Not only is Tam extremely knowledgeable about the area and its history, he is just an all around wonderful person. He is friendly, easy going, and has a good sense of humor. We were immediately comfortable around him like we had known him forever. After we'd walked up Hamburger Hill, Tam took us to a former command post and showed us several craters that were the result of intense bombing. Surrounding us were several water buffaloes quietly grazing in the field. When Tam found out that we had no plan to visit Hoi An, he offered to take us there too. Two days later, we spent the day in the beautiful city of lanterns. We will be forever grateful to him for taking us there. It was truly breathtaking. We cannot recommend Tam enough. He is everything you could ever want in a tour guide and more!

Review of: Private DMZ tour by local guide Tam Le

I had an absolute hoot of a time being taken around the DMZ area by Tam, a proud Quang Tri born-and-bred native. With Tam, you're not being being taken around by some outsider or interloper.

It was originally going to be private tour with my wife and me, but my wife had to pull out because she had been taken ill. So it was me, Tam and the driver.

What a great day it turned out to be!

Tam took me to all the key DMZ sites (Rockpile, Khe Sanh, Ben Hai River checkpoint, Vin Moc, etc) and did a great job explaining the history and the background. He also drew on his family's story of being evacuated during the war to Hanoi, which really helped to bring the experience to life.

More than the tour itself, Tam was just a great fun guy to hang out with. My wife and I travel so we can have genuine cross-cultural exchanges. Tam and I whiled away the day chatting about anything—Vietnamese versus Anglo-Celtic norms, family values, theories on the right way to travel and eat, and even my unholy attachment to country music(!). The time passed really quickly and pleasantly.

At the end of the day trip, Tam was kind enough to show me around his hometown (Dong Ha), introduce me to his family (and allow me to terrorise his toddler) and eat some delicious salad his wife prepared at her streetfood stall.

Tam, thanks for a great day

Review of: Private DMZ tour by local guide Tam Le

Tam Le was our guide to FSB Russell, a very remote location on top of a jungle covered mountain near the DMZ in western Quang Tri Province. Our group included 3 veterans in our 70’s returning to Russell to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of LCPl Jimmy Jackson. (Google it). Tam had to locate the hilltop fire base, meet the Bru people whose village was near the base and line up porters and helpers. The 4KM hike each way was very difficult because it was very steep to the top. Tam made 3 preparation trips to the fire base before we arrived and sent us videos so we would know what we were in for. He is an excellent guide that I now consider a friend. He speaks and corresponds in English very well. You would be wise to hire Tam for your next trip to Quang Tri Province. Bob

We found this tour per chance and didn't regret going for it. Tam was very nice and answered all our questions while guiding us through the DMZ. He showed us a great place to eat as well and also organised a car to take us to Hue afterwards.
I highly recommend!!!!

"Great professional and great person!"

It was a magnificent day, Tams is a great professional who knows and knows how to transmit everything that happened in that wonderful country. It was a shame not to have met him before to hire all the excursions with him. He speaks clear and precise English and if you don't understand something, he looks for the word in your language. He is very attentive and with a great sense of humor for what makes you have a wonderful day. He is a great person with whom we ended up having a snack at the place his wife has for food that of course I recommend! Also if you come to Spain one day, please contact us as we consider you a great friend! 😘😘

After our amazing tour experience with Tam last year we booked another couple of days with him in April this year to go to the world heritage site of My Son and the amazing Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge just out of Da Nang.
My Son was incredible and well worth seeing. Tam is so helpful with lots of interesting information as well as a few good laughs and took us to a great local place for lunch where we enjoyed a local veal specialty and a few beers and great company.
The day trip to Ba Na Hills was made so much easier with Tam as he knows his way around and where to go which saved a lot of time. The Golden Bridge is absolutely amazing, in fact the whole theme park is amazing actually and a really good but different day out.
Afterwards he took us to another great little local place in Da Nang for lunch - brilliant!
We so enjoyed out time again with Tam and can't wait to go back again and spend more time with him seeing some more amazing sites or just chatting and laughing about everything.
Thanks again Tam you are a wonderful friend, Julie and Kelvin

Tam pick us up at our hotel in Phong Nha and took us through many sites of the dmz zone and finally left us at our hotel in Hue. The tour was great, anyone visiting Vietnam should take some time to visit this area to better understand the terrible vietnam war and the strong will of vietnamese people. Tam is a great guide, it was very interesting to discuss with him about the past and the present of Vietnam. He also took us to a real authentic place for lunch where we had amazing buffalo meat. Thank you Tam

Was an amazing trip, the food was awesome, the views were magical and our guide “Tam Le” was very informative and helpful in every way. 4 hours drive from Hue, however, it was worth the drive.

I put out a strange request to transport me and my dog by car from Hanoi to Danang, and Tam responded quickly with a reasonable, affirmative offer. I’m so happy with his service! I was a bit nervous about a loooong two-day car ride with a dog, but Tam is so gentle and relaxed, and he made everything so easy for us. A true ambassador for his people, Tam exemplifies the best of the Vietnamese spirit of openness and hospitality, and reminded me again why I fell in love with this country and its people when I first visited three years ago. Thank you

I had an incredible experience with Tam. I am a history professor, and he is extremely knowledgeable about Vietnamese history, culture, and food. He also speaks great English. I did the two day trip of the DMZ, and he gladly stayed an extra day for a spontaneous tour of Hué. Tam is a great person and a must have guide for anyone traveling in Vietnam. He will take care of you. I highly recommend him! Thank you
